What is Naturalistic Environment Teaching (net) in Aba?

Naturalistic Environment Teaching (NET) is an evidence-based ABA method that embeds skill-building directly into your child’s everyday routines and play. Unlike traditional ABA, which often relies on structured tabletop drills, we use NET to meet your child where they learn best—in the living room, kitchen, or backyard.

In this approach, learning is child-led, meaning our therapists follow your child’s natural interests and motivation. Key features of NET include:

  • Embedded Learning: Teaching happens during real-life moments like snack time, bathtime, or playing with favorite toys.
  • Natural Reinforcement: Instead of artificial rewards like tokens or candy, your child receives rewards directly related to the activity, such as getting a cracker after asking for one or having a ball rolled back to them during play.
  • Focus on Generalization: Because skills are taught in the actual environments where they will be used, children learn to apply what they know across different settings and with different people more naturally.

By focusing on pivotal areas like motivation and self-initiation, we help children build functional communication and social skills that stick. At our practice, we provide 1:1 therapy with Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) overseen by a BCBA to ensure these natural moments lead to lasting independence. WE COUNT ON OUR PARENTS to be active partners in this process, and we provide the training you need so you’re not on your own.
