Can an Rbt Design a Child’s Aba Treatment Plan?

No, a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) cannot design or modify a child’s ABA treatment plan. This responsibility belongs exclusively to the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).

According to industry standards and the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB), there is a clear divide in the scope of practice between these two roles:

  • The BCBA’s Role: As the clinical leader and architect of the program, the BCBA has the sole responsibility for conducting functional assessments, selecting evidence-based interventions, and writing individualized, measurable goals. They are the only professionals authorized to interpret progress data and refine protocols based on a child’s needs.
  • The RBT’s Role: The RBT is responsible for the direct, face-to-face implementation of the protocols exactly as the BCBA has written them. While they collect critical trial-by-trial data during sessions, they do not have the authority to make independent programming decisions.

If a challenge arises during therapy, the RBT must consult with their supervising BCBA rather than making adjustments to the plan themselves. This structure ensures that every change to a child’s treatment is managed by a master’s-level clinician with the necessary expertise.
